Progress continues to climb at the construction sites of the Patras-Pyrgos motorway of Olympia Odos, as according to information from ypodomes.com, the overall progress has now reached 38.4%. Up until the end of March, certifications have exceeded 113 million euros. It is worth reminding that at the beginning of the year, progress had reached 30%.

According to the same sources, in April, the construction progress on the Patras-Pyrgos motorway is expected to exceed 40%, while the goal by the end of June is for the overall completed work to surpass 55%. The ultimate goal, as declared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, is to open the first section of the new motorway this year and for the overall progress to reach 85%.

An important aspect of the construction is that we now have extensive asphalt paving on two out of the three sections, with work set to begin on the third section in the immediate future. According to sources familiar with the project on ypodomes.com, progress at the construction sites has varied until today.

The section from Gastouni to Pyrgos, being constructed by TERNA, is the most advanced, reaching over 57% by the end of March from 45% at the beginning of the year. Asphalt paving has progressed on this section to 50% of the segment, meaning on 10 out of 20 kilometers. There is optimism that this section could be completed by the end of this year.

In the section undertaken by AKTOR, from Karaiika to Gastouni, progress has reached 26.5% from 20% at the beginning of the year, and it is expected to accelerate in the coming period. Preparations are underway in this section to start the first asphalt paving in the immediate future, covering approximately 3-4 kilometers.

In the section managed by AVAX, from Midilogli to Karaiika, progress has climbed to 35% from 27% at the beginning of the year. The works here are progressing to a degree where there is optimism that it will reach 50% in the next two to three months. Regarding asphalt paving, it is being carried out over a length of 4-5 kilometers and will be further extended until summer.

The first motorway in Ilia

The Patras-Pyrgos motorway may be a significant project that will extend the motorway all the way to Ancient Olympia, but it also represents a first for the region. It will be the first closed motorway for the region of Ilia, which, from its current status as a lagging area in road safety, will see a significant improvement.

This is because it will feature approximately 50 kilometers of modern closed motorway and around 65 kilometers of upgraded old national road. With the road safety works carried out on the National Road Patras-Pyrgos, fatal accidents have practically been minimized, potentially making it the only region in Greece with such characteristics along an old national road axis.

The project includes the construction of the section from Patras to Pyrgos, with a length of 74.8 kilometers, completing the motorway Elefsina-Corinth-Patras-Pyrgos, better known as Olympia Odos. The new section of the motorway, in the first 13.0 kilometers, will be built by widening the existing National Road (NR), while the remaining 61.8 kilometers will be constructed on a new alignment.

The new motorway, as an extension of Olympia Odos, is designed with a four-lane cross-section with a width of 21.30 meters (excluding side configurations). It consists of 2 traffic lanes per direction with a total width of 14 meters (4×3.50 meters), Emergency Lanes (EL) with corresponding guiding lanes with a total width of 4.60 meters (2×2.30 meters), safety lanes on the central median with a total width of 2.10 meters (2×1.05 meters), a central median with a two-sided New Jersey barrier with a width of 0.60 meters and a height of 0.80 meters. The project is funded by the NSRF 2014-2020 and will also be funded as part of the NSRF 2021-2027.
