The first bulldozers have already put to work, since last August, for the great project of Faleron Bay Restoration. The initiation of the construction phase was relatively but the schedule is quite tight as the project was signed in May 2017 and must be completed by mid-February 2019 (21-month deadline).

The first works concern the partial undergrounding and relocation of Posidonos Ave., 3 metres deeper and 90 metres towards the seafront more specifically, along with its reconnection with the existing road network.

The next phase includes the demolition of the old, surface Posidonos Ave. and the execution of flood control works as the area has been hit multiple times in the past from floods. Regarding flood-proofing works, two new dry, flood channels will be created, one heading West and another heading East while further extensions of the existing channels will be constructed reinforcing the current infrastructure. Projects include a new coastal collector and the relocation of the existing natural gas pipelines.

What is left now is the preparation of the project’s Phase B’ tenders, involving the creation of the coastal park. It is reminded that a study regarding the creation of the new coastal park has been prepared and finalized by Renzo Piano, a few years ago, a study that was funded by Stavros Niarchos Foundation. According to the latest available information, there may be a redesign of the existing plan, as far as the uses of the park are concerned, in order for the park’s degradation, over the years, to be avoided.

With the completion of the coastal park, Athens will have a new, transformed coastal front just 10 minutes by car from the centre of the city. The coastal park will be the largest of the capital with an area covering about 300 acres, adding greenery in an urban environment that desperately needs it. This, combined with the under development, coastal park in Piraeus’ Lipasmata area, will provide the capital city’s complex with 2 major green poles upgrading the air quality and the quality of life of the residents.
