The first extension of the Toronto subway network outside the city’s municipal boundary, and the first addition to the system in 15 years, was inaugurated by Canadian prime minister Mr Justin Trudeau on December 15.

The 8.6km six-station Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension continues Line 1 north from its current terminus at Sheppard West (formerly Downsview) to York University and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). Passenger services on the extension will begin on December 17 and trains will operate at 4-5-minute headways, with a 14-minute journey time between Sheppard West and VMC.

The $C 3.18bn ($US 2.48bn) project was funded by the Canadian federal government ($C 697m), the province of Ontario ($C 974m), the city of Toronto ($C 904m), and York regional municipality ($C 604m).
