Take-off runway 16-34 of Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia” was released to full operation yesterday. From 7 am in the morning, normal operation began, restoring the  pace of the airport to pre-construction works rhythms.

A statement by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport said: “Fully respecting its commitment to both Thessaloniki and its citizens, the Ministry not only completed the upgrade of the main runway in time, but delivered it 3 weeks ahead of the requested completion date”.

It is noted that the completion of the upgrade works makes the runway completely safe and it staved off the risk of returning several millions of euros to the European Commission, as the project was co-funded by the EU.

For the event of the runway’s delivery yesterday, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Spirtzis stressed that the capacity of the airport will be immediately strengthened: “From 4 arrivals and 4 departures per hour, gradually we will reach 15 arrivals and 15 departures while by the end of the year, when the second runway will be ready, “Makedonia” Airport will be able to handle more than 25 arrivals and 25 departures hourly on its runways.”
