Another setback that troubled the lengthy project of Thessaloniki Metro is finally put to rest. The solution proposed by Attiko Metro (implementing entity of the project) regarding the archaeological findings in Venizelou Station, was approved by the Central Archaelogical Council (CAC).

Essentially the conclusion of these talks signifies the happy ending of an issue raised in 2012 and preoccupied the Ministries of Infrastructure and Culture, residents of the city and the local constructions world in general.

Mr. G. Milopoulos, Chairman of Attiko Metro, stated at Ypodomes.com: “The unanimous approval by CAC of our technical solution proposal with a simultaneous promotion of the antiquities by country, inaugurates a new era for the transportations of Thessaloniki as it will contribute, both to the mitigation of its existing transportation problems and the promotion of its cultural identity.”

“The view that Thessaloniki needs both a Metro system and antiquities has now become official as it has been ratified by a robust technical study and the decision of the State. All involved bodies, Attiko Metro, the Ministry of Culture, the Ephorate of Antiquities and the municipality, having secured the people’s approval, have to cooperate in order to materialize a long-desired dream. Today is the day that we turned our backs to a past of meaningless confrontations, retractions and delays in the biggest infrastructure project Thessaloniki has ever seen”, he added.
