Impressive, modern, imposing and at the same time a reference point. This is the new terminal of Thessaloniki’s “Maκedonia” Airport that is gradually opening its gates to passengers.
Its operation was launched by Fraport about three weeks ago and according to information, the first flight was Thessaloniki-Chios route with a total of 4 passengers. What is open for the public is the temporary check-in area with the goal being to complete the permanent check-in area by autumn.

At the same time, the renovation of the old terminal has begun, in order to be aesthetically compatible with the new terminal. The pedestrian bridge that connects the two terminals has also been completed and is now operating normally.
According to the official schedule, the project was to be completed in April 2021, but Fraport estimates that this could be done up to 4 months earlier (i.e. around the end of 2020). The construction works did not stop even during the lockdown period and now the project is entering its final stage.
“Makedonia” Airport is the largest investment for Fraport Greece -among the 14 Regional Airports- with the amount for its upgrade reaching 95m euros, from a total of 415m euros spent by the company in all airports it manages in the country.
With the addition of the new terminal, “Makedonia” Airport will double its surface, i.e. about 34,000 sq.m. which that will allow better management of passengers and the largest commercial spaces by Fraport, since these are estimated at more than 12,000 sq.m.
