Even though discussions regarding Athens Metro Line 4 revolve around the auction of the first section -from Alsos Veikou to Goudi-Attiko Metro has already started preparing its plans for the future sections of the Line.

Currently, studies are being conducted for the next 3 development stages of the Line, which, with their implementation, will create a 30-km-long  line and 33 stations. In its final form, Line 4 will be starting from start from Perissos and will be ending at Athens-Thessaloniki motorway axis (near Lykovrisi) and will also have a branch from Evangelismos to Ano Ilioupoli.

The total cost of the line is estimated at 3.3bn euros, out of which 1.4bn, concerns the first “mature” section between Alsos Veikou and Goudi.

The next projects for Line 4

After planning the first part of the line, there will be 3 more auctions to complete it.

The next auction is expected to include the northern section of the line (i.e. Goudi-Maroussi-Ethniki Odos) with an additional 15 km and 11 stations. These will be: KATECHAKI (connection with Line 3), FAROS, FILOTHEI, SIDERA, OAKA, PARADEISOS (connection with the Suburban Railway), OTE, MAROUSSI (connection with Line 1), PEFKI, LYKOVRISI and Ethniki Odos (National Motorway).

The second project concerns the completion of the western section, from Veikou to Perissos, with 2 km and 2 stations: PERISSOS (connection with Line 1 and Ano Galatsi).

Finally, the plan provides for a branch to the southern suburbs, between Evangelismos and Ano Ilioupoli, with a line of 4 km and 3 stations (KAISARIANI, PANGRATI and ANO ILIOUPOLI).

This particular project is considered to be more demanding as it will probably be the first section of an entirely new line of Athens Metro, meaning that EVANGELISMOS will be the connection station with the main line.

The problem for the implementation of these extensions is the lack of funding, since the first segment from Alsos Veikou to Goudi is the only to have been included in NSRF 2014-2020.
