The boom of Athens International Airport, which, unlike the financial situation of the country, has achieved a lasting growth for more than 4 years, creates excellent conditions for prospective investments within its facilities.

It is noted that the Airport has a limit regarding its passenger capacity which is estimated at 26mn passengers. With the current pace, this figure will be reached probably before the end of 2019, i.e. about 2 years’ time.

This means that the next day is being prepared in consultation with IATA, concerning the expansion of the Terminal. Rumors about the budget of the investment are already circulating with the first sums being estimated at 300-400mn euros.

Certainly, the expansion of the Terminal (and not the construction of a new one) should reasonably start no later than year later in order for them to be completed by 2020 and render AIA capable to serve passengers as an upgraded hub of Southeastern Europe.

The details and what will actually happen is not yet announced, but we are very close to the “disclosure” of the large-scale investment plan which is under consideration for Spata. Construction companies are in also in standby, ready to express their interest for one of the largest, building-related projects for the next three years with tight completion schedules.

At the moment, airport executives keep a low profile, but it is now a “common secret” that the investment for the expansion of AIA’s facilities, is finally coming to fruition.

Ioanna Papadopoulou, Head of Airport’s Communication Division, noted that “this year sees an increase of 8.5%, which will bring a new absolute record of about 21.6-21.8mon passengers. She also added that the trend seems equally strong for the following year too and, provided that this positive streak goes on, Athens Airport will exceed 24mn passengers, a figure that is almost 80% higher than 2013, just 5 years ago.
