Preparation for the railway extension to the city of Patras is in progress – Tender is expected during 2021

The preparation for the big railway project that will bring the modern train at the “doorstep” of Patras continues. According to information from, a few days ago it was decided to update ERGOSE’s studies for the project Aigio (Rododafni) -Rio.

The update was deemed necessary to add changes to the design, in line with the latest requirements as they were formulated last year. The goal is for the project to be able to mature and be auctioned within the year. It is worth noting that the environmental conditions of the project have been approved.

Going to the auction

In the next period, it will be necessary to complete the approval of the large project file and then to approve the tender documents by the Managing Authority of the YME-PERAA Operational Program of the NSRF 2014-2020.

The new double line will start after Aigio station and will end in Rio. It should be added that ERGOSE has been running two contracts for a long time (in the subdivisions Aigio-Psathopyrgos and Psathopyrgos-Rio) that concern the infrastructure of this new line and therefore this new contract will include all the other projects to be put into commercial operation.

More specifically include lines (bonus), signaling, electric drive, ETCS, new stations, and stops. The new double line will be 32 km long and includes the stops: Rododafni, Selianitika, Kamares, Psathopyrgos, Arachovitika, Ag. Basil, Rio and Bozaitika.

Athens-Rio in 100 minutes

The cost of the project exceeds 130 million euros and is one of the new emblematic railway projects, part of the planning of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. It is estimated that with its completion it will be able to serve the passenger public of Patras, and it is estimated that the distance Athens-Rio will be covered in about 100 minutes.

This is a critical project that is the step for the implementation of the major project of the final arrival of the train in the city and port of Patras. If the contract can be signed in 2022, the line will be able to operate until 2025, almost 15 years after the interruption of intercity routes with Athens.
