The next generation of fixed-rail projects in Greece

For quite a fe years now, Metro, Tram, and Suburban Railway projects have, admittedly stagnated, mainly due to the financial crisis. Since 2006, we have been doing circles around specific projects; Thessaloniki Metro’s Main and Kalamaria Lines, the electrification of Athens’ Suburban Railway, the extension of Athens Metro Line 3 and the Tramway to Piraeus and of cource, Athens Metro Line 4.

For the latter we had to wait until August 2017, for its tender to be launched. The construction phase is scheduled to start in 2019. But this will be the beginning for a whole new generation of fixed-rail projects in Athens and Thessaloniki. In the following years, plans that have been maturing slowly for a long time, will finally make it to the “queue” for their implementation.

Today, Ypodomes.com, has brought together, upcoming Metro, Tram and Suburban Railway projects that will seek funding in the future:

Metro

– Extension of Athens Metro Line 4 to the North (Athens-Thessaloniki Motorway) with 11 new stations: Katechaki, Faros, Filothei, Sidera, Olympic Stadium (Line 1), Paradisos, OTE, Marousi (Line  1), Pefki, Likovrisi, Ethniki Odos / 1.3bn euros

– Extension of Athens Metro Line 4 to the Northwest (connection with Line 1 in Perissos Station) with 2 new stations: Ano Nea Ionia, Perissos (Line 1) / 220mio euros

– Extension of Athens Metro Line 4 to the Southeast (Ilioupoli area) with 3 new stations: Pagkrati Vironas, Ano Ilioupoli / 370mio euros

– Extension of Athens Metro Line 2 to the West with 3 new stations: Palatiani, Ilion, Aghios Nikolaos / 350mio euros

– Undergrounding of Athens Metro Line 1, Faliro-Pireas section and construction of a new station (Kaminia) / 100mio euros

– Extension of Thessaloniki Metro to Efkarpia with 5 new stations, (construction of a branch, starting from Main Line’s “Dimokratia” Station): Neapoli, Aghia Varvara, Stavroupoli, Polichni, Efkarpia / 500mio euros

– Extension of Thessaloniki Metro’s Main Line to the West with 4 new stations: Ampelokipi, Menemeni, Evosmos, Kordelio / 440mio euros

– Extension of Thessaloniki Metro’s Kalamaria Branch to the Southeast with 4 new stations: Scholi Polemou, IKEA, Thermi, Makedonia Airport / 400mio euros

Tram

Tramway’s extension to Keratsini and Perama: Concerns the first major extension, after the under completion project in Piraeus, of the Tram network to Keratsini and Perama. New terminal is planned to be in Perama Ferry. / Cost: 180mio euros

Suburban Railway

– Extension to Lavrio: Concerns a 32-km long extension to Koropi and the Port of Lavrio. It will feature 10 new stations (Markopoulo, Kalivia, Kouvaras, Keratea, Daskalio 1, VIOPA Kerateas, Daskalio 2, Thoriko, Kiprianos, Lavrio) / 160mio euros

– Extension to Rafina: Concerns a 6-km long extension from Athens International Airport to the Port of Rafina / 80mio euros.
