Many topics and projects in the Attiko Metro have resurfaced and there is great expectation regarding the object that is coming to market. Yesterday’s announcement by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Costas Karamanlis, for the upcoming auction of the extension of Line 2 to Ilion, is the last of a series of developments that bring the Metro projects to the forefront.

The extension of 4km with 3 stations (Palatiani, Ilion, Agios Nikolaos) and the cost of 350 million euros, opens the curtain for the new Metro projects. The project needs design maturation and environmental approval. It is expected to be financed by the new NSRF 2021-2027.

According to information from ypodomes.com, Attiko Metro has targeted the extensions to Glyfada and Kallithea, while in the background we have the next phase of Line 4 from Goudi through Kifissia to Ethniki Odos. The undergrounding of line 1 Faliro-Piraeus also has a place in the Metro projects.

The extension to Glyfada

The extension to Glyfada seems to be updating since it has been planned by Attiko Metro from 2000 when the first small sections of lines 2 and 3 were operational but never went ahead.

Attiko Metro is considering the extension of line 2 to Glyfada and for this reason the preparation of the necessary transport studies and sustainability studies has begun. One of the scenarios under consideration envisages the construction of three new stations which will connect Glyfada with the southern terminal of line 2 in Elliniko.

It should be reminded that months ago, in a meeting that the mayor of Glyfada had with the Minister of Transport Costas Karamanlis, the request for the extension of the “red line” to the shopping center of Glyfada was made and the minister was instructed to join the planning of Attiko Metro and start the maturation processes. The question remains whether we will have two or three stations, which will depend on the route chosen.

According to information, two of the three new stations will be built on Vouliagmeni Avenue, while the end of the line will be located in Agios Konstantinos Square in Glyfada.

The extension to Kallithea

The extension to Kallithea with a terminal at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is also a project that has been considered by the Attico Metro for many years. It is also a commitment of the State towards the SNFCC (the connection of the Center with the Metro).

Many scenarios have been heard in this direction, but the strongest is for a branch to “leave” most likely from the PETRALONA station of Line 1 of the Metro and through Kallithea to reach the Cultural Center. Some initial procedures have started here but we are in view of decisions that remain to be made.

This extension, if finally launched, will serve the densely populated areas of Kallithea and Paleo Faliro while the Metro will reach the shores of Faliro creating an important network.

Faliro-Piraeus undergrounding

This project is well known, and as ypodomes.com informed you a few days ago, it foresees the undergrounding of Metro line 1 from Faliro to Piraeus station. The project is mature in terms of design and it remains to update and re-approve the relevant study, find funding from the NSRF 2021-2027 and auction the project.

The cost of the project reaches 100 million euros and includes a stopover at the entrance of the city called KAMINIA.

Phase B of Line 4 Goudi-Ethniki Odos

Here we are talking about a future project as there is a study “immaturity” while its cost exceeds 1.2 billion euros. It is in the plans of the extensions and will cover Kifissias Avenue while it will continue further north, passing through Maroussi, Pefki, Lykovrysi to reach the National Road. This extension includes 11 new Metro stations and a 12km new underground line.
