The image of Salamina island is about to change dramatically with the operation of the Underwater Tunnel connecting it with Attica and more specifically with Perama area. The project, that has been announced multiple times in the past, has now been stabilized and on course to its implementation as we are already halfway as far as the tender is concerned.

This time, 4 major consortia claim a highly commercial and profitable concession contract, as it is recorded that Salamina-Perama ferry, according to official data, is the second busiest across Europe, second only to Calais-England route.

If everything goes on as planned, this time next year we will know the concessionaire allowing the project to start in 2019 and finish about 4 years later. The great characteristic of the Salamina-Perama Underwater Tunnel is that will establish a permanent connection that change the dynamics of the island. Driving time in the tunnel will be approximately 1 minute, as the overall length of the tunnel will be less than 500 meters.

The improvement of time distance between Athens and the island is also expected to boost Salamina’s commercial activities as it will have much easier and faster access to the mainland.  Another important element is the possibility of OASA routing buses up to Paloukia area in Salamina, given that there will be land access, thus incorporating the island in the grid of municipal transport services.

The Underwater Tunnel between Salamina and Perama is certainly a project that will improve accessibility and promote the development of the island in a more sustainable way making indispensable for the local community and Attica region in general.
