Topographic surveys regarding the extension of the Tramway to Keratsini and Perama suburbs of Piraeus have commenced, as the relevant tender by Attiko has been completed. The contractor is GEOGRAPHIKI SA. The aim is for these studies to be completed in 2018, allowing the execution of the final studies shortly after, which will be the crucial step for the materialization of the project.

A few days ago, Attiko Metro’s CEO, Mr. Theodoros Papadopoulos, said that the construction phase for the extension could start in 2020. It is reminded that, according to the decision of Attica’s Regional Authorities, an invitation for this extension was published for the amount of 82mio euros, that have been appropriated for this purpose.

As Ypodomes.com is informed, the project’s inclusion in NSRF 2014-2020 will be achieved with a future revision of the operational program. However, these initial studies are funded from Attiko Metro’s own resources.

For the time being, this is the most important development regarding the future of the Tram network in Athens. The orientation of this extension is not accidental at all, as there are more than 150,000 residents in the area. It will be a long extension with an estimated total length of 14 km all the way to Perama’s Ferry Port.

The new Tram project will upgrade the densely populated area of Keratsini and will release new green spaces, giving a major facelift in the overbuilt suburb, located in the outskirts of Athens Metropolitan area. When implemented, a long-standing demand of the people living in the area, will finally, have been fulfilled after decades.
