Road projects had been declining in the recent years due to multiple problems in the projects for the country’s 5 motorways, the crisis and the shift towards rail transport, dictated by the European Union, making major road-related projects seem that have come to an end.

However in Greece, still in 2019, plans for new motorway projects are still here. Even though the backbone of the county’s network has been completed, new generation projects are on their way in order to satisfy people’s demand for better quality infrastructure and improve accessibilty in areas that are currently lagging compared to other parts of Greece.

Today ypodomes.com presents you the 6 largest and most ambitious plans for new motorway projects in the country:

1. Attica Motorway’s extensions (1.5bn euros)

Plans that date back to 2004 but haven’t been implemented yet. Current designs are oriented towards the extension of both road and railway to Lavrio and Rafina ports, the construction of an urban road tunnel connecting Katechaki Ave. to Vouliagmenis Ave. as well as the extension of Kymis Ave. making it the largest upcoming motorway project.

2. Crete’s Northern Motorway Axis (1.4bn euros)

Tender’s Phase A is already in progress promoting the implementation of the project via concession and PPP. The target is for the contractor to be awarded by 2020 and the project to be completed four years later, in 2024, transforming the most dangerous major road axis of the country to a safe, covered motorway.

3. Patra-Pyrgos Motorway (300m euros)

Concerns the extension of Olympia Motorway to the Southewest. The “sliced” tender is now at its final stage as the contracts are expected to be ratified by the Greek Parliament soon, giving the “green light” for their signing.

4. Ioannina-Kakavia Motorway (280m euros)

Concerns the extension of Ionian Motorway towards the Albanian borders (Northwest). It is an important projects that will integrate the motorway network of Epirus region, however its implementation model has not been decided yet.

5. Chalkida Bypass (Nea Lampsakos-Psachna / 180m euros)

A project that had been announced by the previous Gov’t and has matured by the current administration. Funding has been secured with well-informed sources saying that the tender is to be launched in 2019. It is a very important project that will upgrade safety in a region of Greece with a really low quality road network.

6. Kalo Nero-Tsakona Motorway (150m euros)

A future project that could be considered as a branch of Moreas Motorway, running across Peloponnese, ending at an intersection, at the branching of Moreas to Kalamata and Sparti in the South.
