Record low for Athens International Airport in April with 21,759 passengers

A record low was recorded in April for Athens International Airport, in terms of passenger traffic due to the pandemic of COVID-19, causing a drop of almost 99%.

In order to understand the magnitude of the plunge, in April 2019, 1,986,756 passengers passed through ‘El. Venizelos’ Airport and this year, just 21,759, making it by far the worst performance in the 19 years of its history.

April was the month when COVID-19 pandemic, as well as its effects on air transport, peaked in Europe and the United States, minimizing air travel. As a result, the airport’s passenger traffic was almost zero, being 98.9% below the corresponding levels of 2019. Both domestic and international passengers recorded a decrease of 97.9% and 99.3% respectively.

It is interesting that, according to the statistics, in April, perhaps for the first time in the history of El Venizelos Airport, domestic passengers were more than international passengers. More specifically, 11,917 passengers flew inside Greece, while regarding international traffic, we had just 9,842 passengers.

In total, during the first four months of the year, the airport’s traffic rose to 3.5 million passengers, down 45% from 2019, due to a significant reduction due to the pandemic both in March and April. International passengers fell by 44.7% and domestic passengers by 45.7%.
