Railway network of Thessaly takes one important step ahead and becomes electrified. According to statements of Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Mr. Christos Spirtzis, tender calls for the electrification of new railway sections between Larissa-Volos and Paleoparsalos-Kalambaka will be launched in February. These, along with the upgrade of Athens-Thessaloniki main corridor, will introduce the region of Thessaly into the era of electrification and modernized rail infrastructure.

The first project concerns the electrification and the installation of signaling and ETCS systems on the single-track line of Larissa-Volos section (about 61 km). The new design includes the replacement of the line with standard gauge track for Latomio-Volos section and Nea Ionia Detour. The cost of the project is 60mio euros and its duration will be 24 months. If everything runs smoothly, it will be completed in the beginning of 2021. The project is funded by NSRF 2014-2020.

The second project is the electrification and the installation of signaling and ETCS Level 1 systems on the existing single-track railway line between Paleofarsalos and Kalambaka, with a length of approximately 80 km. The cost of the project is 47,5mio euros and it is also funded by NSRF. The duration of the works is estimated at 24 months, putting the operation of the line in early 2021.
