The concept for the construction project of Piraeus’ new Courhouse is maturing steadily as, after many years, the location is now “locked”; and that would be the building right next to the Municipal Theatre, at the heart of the city (the old “Rallios School”). The property for the erection of the Courthouse was conceded by the Municipality of Piraeus.

Well-informed sources told Ypodomes.com that the municipal authorities updated the license of the building for Courthouse usage, for a period of 49 years, prompting the Ministry of Infrastructure to make the rest of the necessary moves in order for the project to be finally implemented.

One of the Municipality’s demands, in exchange for the concession, is to receive as a minimum profit, the rental fees from the ground floor of the future building. As an additional aid, it also allocated parking spaces for future use by the Courthouse, a key move that is expected to make matters considerably easier regarding the issue of the building’s construction license.

George Stamatogiannis, Chairman of Piraeus’ Judicial Club, told Ypodomes.com that currently a project study is being proposed by the National Technical University of Athens for 50,000 euros, a study that is expected to decide the required budget of the project. It is noteworthy that the Judicial Club, given the financial hardship of the country these years, is organizing donations in order to finance it.

Nevertheless, the Courthouse’s erection cost is expected to be as high as 15-20mn euros. What is really encouraging though is that there is a will from all involved parties for the project to proceed, so hopefully there will be a way in a reasonable timeframe.

The new Courthouse of the old “Rallios School” building will accommodate under one roof many services, currently scattered around the city, making it easier to the citizens to complete their transactions in a very accessible part of Piraeus’ center (access to Tram, Metro Line 3, buses etc.).  Implementing entity of the project will be the Ministry of Infrastructure and Building Infrastuctures S.A. and its construction is estimated to last 3 years.
