European Commission (EC) president-elect, Mrs Ursula von der Leyen, has nominated Mrs Rovana Plumb as transport commissioner, succeeding Mrs Violeta Bulc.

Plumb is a member of the European Parliament and as a member of Romania’s Social Democrat Party held various ministerial posts in the country’s government, including Environment and Climate Change, Labour, European Funds, Education and Transport.

In a letter to Plumb, von der Leyen says the new commissioner’s task over the next five years will be to ensure European transport is “sustainable, safe, affordable and accessible.”

Plumb will be responsible for developing a comprehensive strategy for sustainable and smart mobility and contributing to the “zero-pollution ambition” of the new Commission.

Von der Leyen is also looking to focus on developing a “fair and functioning internal market for transport” and completing missing links in the infrastructure links and the Trans-European Transport Network “as swiftly as possible.”
