Excavation works for PIRAEUS Metro Station, the 5th station of Line 3’s extension are expected to be completed in Autumn 2018. According to information, the pace of the works is now intensive, as the timing is quite tight. The station is currently being excavated with relevant works of the 2nd level. The challenge here is the depth of the station (which will reach approximately 40 meters underground) and the proximity to the sea, which is practically adjacent to it.

PIRAEUS station is also the last technical challenge for Attiko Metro, as both TBM’s tunneling works (the machine will be removed from the Deligiannis Well in the coming weeks) and civil engineering works, are almost completed. The extension, in its entirety, will have 7.5 km of a double underground line and 6 new underground stations that will end at the Port and the center of Piraeus. When completed, the line, along with the “shared” stations of the Suburban Railway’s network, will have a total length of 50 km, will be starting from the Municipal Theater of Piraeus and, heading Northeast, will be ending at Athens International Airport at Spata area. The aim is for AGHIA VARVARA, KORYDALLOS and NIKEA stations to be released in June 2019, and 2 years later, MANIATIKA, PIRAEUS and the MUNICIPAL THEATRE.

Construction-wise, in PIRAEUS Station, levels -1 and -2 of the main station are excavated by 13%, along with the installation of retainer brackets. Gantry cranes are also instated in the construction site. At MUNICIPAL THEATRE Station, which is also the future terminal of Line 3 Terminal, works concerning the roofing slab are in full progress,  as well as concreting at the access tunnel to Bakoyannis Square.
