Phase A’ of the tender regarding the construction of Athens Metro Line 4 has been completed and very shortly, in a matter of days as ypodomes.com sources point out, Phase B’ will be announced which concerns the submission of the technical offers. This is the most critical stage as with its completion, the participating consortia will finally be invited to submittheir financial offers, which will lead us to the contractor of the largest infrastructure project of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and Attiko Metro.

The target is for the contractor to declared soon  and the project to enter its pre-contractual period. After that, the contract will be sent to the Court of Auditors and then will be ratified by the Greek Parliament, which will lead to its final signing. Of course the time required for this process will also depend on whether appeals will be filed between the contenders.

It is noted that the project for the construction of Athens Metro Line 4 is the largest metro-related project of all times in Greece, surpassing in terms of scope and budget, Lines 2 and 3 combined, back in the early 1990s.

New Athens Metro Line 4 will not be very similar to existing Lines 2 and 3, from a technical point of view. All stations will be having a platform length of 110 meters, equipped with safety doors that will be opening upon trains’ arrivals. The total cost is estimated at 1.8bn euros (1.45bn excl. VAT) while works are expected to last roughly 8 years. Trains will be fully automatic and driverless (just Line Thessaloniki Metro) while the new control center will be constructed along with the 13-km-long new line. Necessary funds amounting to the project’s budget by 75%, have been secured by EIB and NSRF.

The 3 contenders are: 1. TERNA – VINCI – SIEMENS AG, 2. J&P AVAX – GHELLA SpA – ALSTOM TRANSPORT SA and 3. AKTOR – ANSALDOSTA SpA – HITACHI RAIL ITALY

Line 4 will be covering most of the densely populated areas of the capital starting from Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Gizi, Alexandra’s Ave., Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki heading to Evangelismos, Ilisia, Zografou, Near East, Kessariani and finally Goudi, a few hundred meters from Mesogion Ave. Athens Metro Line 4 will be serving 220,000 passengers daily.

Athens Metro Line 4 in its final form, will be33.5 km long with 31 stations. The next phases of the of the line’s development include extensions towards Athens – Thessaloniki motorway axis and Perissos (connection with Line 1 station). For these two extensions, funds of 1.5bn euros will have to be sought (excl. VAT).
