Operation of the 3 new stations: AGHIA VARVARA, KORYDALLOS and NIKEA, the first half of Athens Metro Line extension to Piraeus will be postponed. This time, the reason is not related to construction delays but… legal issues.
Sources toldypodomes.com that a tender that had been running for the supply of BACS (telecommanding system), which is indispensable for the functionality of the project, has been stuck due to an appeal of a participant, that has been lingering in the Council of State.
The result is the postponement of the stations’ delivery to commercial operation and before the verdict of the CoS, it is impossible to make any predictions.
Additionally, TETRA system needs to be installed , although it does not affect the new stations’ functionality as well as electronic ticket validation equipment (i.e. barriers and ticket vending machines).
From all the above, the conclusion is that it would be risky to make prediction regarding the operation of the 3 new, major Metro stations that will facilitate the movement of tens of thousands of passengers daily.
The new section of Line 3, between Aghia Marina and Nikea will connect the densely populated areas of Aghia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikea municipalities, giving direct access to major transport hubs of the capital such as Syntagma, Omonia, Athens Central Railway Station, Doukissis Plakentias the Port of Piraeus and, of course, Athens International Airport.
