A very important development regarding the maturation of projects related to the so-called “Railway Egnatia” and the major “Sea2Sea”, took place with the activation of “Phase C” studies for the connection of the New Port of Kavala (in Nea Karvali) with Toksotes Ksanthis.
According to ypodomes.com, on August 3, ERGOSE’s decision, for the studies completing the preparation of the tender procedure for 1.27mln euros, were assigned to 8 collaborating Technical Studies Agencies:

The project concerns the construction of a new signle-track railway line with a length of 31.8 km, connecting the commercial port of Kavala (Limenas Filippos in the area of Nea Karvali) with the existing line Thessaloniki – Alexandroupoli, in Toksotes, Ksanthi.
The cost of the project is estimated at around 250mln euros and is part of the new Thessaloniki- Kavala – Xanthi route which promises to reduce time distance between Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli by 3 hours, and which, under the new guidelines for the European TEN-T policy for 2014-2020 period, is considered to be a part of the “core network”.
The new line will be electrified and, for the most part, will be streching along with Egnatia Motorway, up to the intersection with Thessaloniki – Alexandroupoli line, in Toksotes area Xanthi (near Greek Sugar Industry, EBZ). The new line will also bring the construction of a new station.
Phases A and B of the studies were completed with european funding in the period 1994-1999, while the current, final study will be co-funded by Connecting Europe Facility 2014-2020 Mechanism (CEF).
