New Terminal of Thessaloniki International Airport to be completed by 2020

The future of Thessaloniki’s Airport “Macedonia” was presented by Fraport Greece during the foundation ceremony, held on Wednesday, September 19, at the site where the new Terminal Station of the airport will be located in 2 years’ time.
 
The event was attended by Gov’t officials, political parties, as well as representatives of the local authorities, professional bodies and associations from Thessaloniki and Macedonia Region. On behalf of Fraport Greece, the event was welcomed by Dr. Stefan Schulte, Chairman of the Executive Board of Fraport AG and Mr. Dimitri Copelouzos, President of Copelouzos Group, Mr. Petros Souretis, Managing Director of Intrakat, the contractor of the project, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Greece, Mr. Alexander Zinell, who also addressed a brief greeting.
 
In addition to the construction of a new Terminal Station with a total area of ​​more than 34,033 sq.m., the “new era” for Macedonia Airport includes the renovation of the existing terminal, covering a surface of 24,000 sq.m., as well as the construction of a new Fire Station. The existing Wastewater Treatment Unit will also be upgraded and will be connected to the city’s network.

At the same time, major upgrading projects will be carried out, such as: refurbishment of the asphalt in the landing, take-off and parking areas of the aircrafts and the installation of a modern baggage handling and management system. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2021.
 
After the completion of the major construction project, the capacity of Thessaloniki Airport will increase significantly, turning the airport into a modern gateway to Thessaloniki and the wider region of Macedonia.
 
More specifically, check-in stations will increase by 47%, with doubled security points. At the same time, luggage belts will increase by 75%, with the total number of airport gates increasing by 50%.
