New tenders are about to be launched by Attiko Metro considering 2 future extensions of the Thessaloniki Metro. According to the company’s Chairman, Mr. Yannis Milopoulos all necessary actions are underway in order for the tender to be prepared and take place in 2018.

The, initially, estimated cost of the project is 30mn euros, an amount that could be modified till the tender notice and its main scope is the override of utility networks, archaeological excavations and the completion of time-consuming expropriations.

In this way, when preparatory works will be completed, there won’t be the usual, further delays of the main project, resulting to a more efficient and punctual delivery of the extension.

Nevertheless, funding for the 2 Western extensions of Thessaloniki Metro is not yet secured for the 950mio euros required for its implementation, making the project, for the time being, relatively distant.

The extension to Efkarpia area has the same design with the branch to Kalamaria, as it connects to the Main Line Station of “Dimokratia” all the way to the city’s Ring Road, with 5 new stations. Essentially with the construction and operation of this extension, 2 autonomous lines will be created with some common stations in between.

The 4 new stations to Evosmos and Kordelio concern the extension of the Main Line to the West of the New Railway Station terminal, covering densely populated areas, reaching the Western end of the Thessaloniki Ring Road.
