The Minister of Infrastructure and Infrastructure, Mr. Christos Spiritzis and ELPE administration annouced yesterday, at a joint press conference, the re-use of the abandoned railway line between Acharnes Railway Centre (SKA) and Elefsina. According to the statements of the Minister and the Secretary General, Mr. Thanos Vourdas, the project will be divided into 2 phases.
The first phase concerns the required studies and the refurbishment of the lines in the above-mentioned section, with a total cost of 27mio euros. The line will be incorporated in Athens Suburban Railway network and will have 3 stops in between. The second phase of the project will be implemented by ERGOSE and will include the electrification of the line, the installation of signaling systems and the refurbishment of existing facilities of former stations that are intended to be re-used. The cost is not yet estimated. This is, undoubtedly, a major transportation project for the region of Western Attica as it is going to unite the urban and industrial center of Thriassion Plain, serving tens of thousands of passengers daily.
It is also noteworthy that this project will connect directly, for the first time, the Thriassion area with the metropolitan complex of Athens and Piraeus, making it crucial especially for Elefsina, which will be the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2021.
