The successful completion of the required tests on Railway Bridge 26 in Ekarra, Fthiotida, were announced yesterday with a press release by ERGOSE, while at the same time, it was made known that next week the last under construction section of Athens-Thessaloniki corridor, Aghies-Domokos, about 21 km long, will be released to operation.

With the release of this last section, the modernized, double-track railway line of the country’s main corridor connecting Piraeus and Athens to Thessaloniki, with a total length of 500 km will finally operate, allowing a significant reduction of the distance between Greece’s 2 largest cities to about 4 hours.

It is reminded that according to a previous press release of ERGOSE, diesel trains will be using the new line between Lianokladi and Domokos and shortly after (around the end of February), electric trains will also enter service.

The ceremony for the full operation of the new, upgraded line is expected to be attended by Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Christos Spirtzis while there will be updates for the remaining works regarding signaling and ETCS systems, that will allow a further reduction of the time distance to just 3 hours and 30 minutes.
