Lefkada island double connection with Aktio-Amvrakia Motorway to be signed soon

The important road project for the double connection of Lefkada with Aktio-Amvrakia axis, is headed for signatures. According to information of, the contract was approved by the Court of Audit and these days the project is reviewed by the Parliament and more specifically by the Production and Trade Committee, in order to be presented.

Then, all necessary documents and the guarantee for good execution will be requested in order for the relevant signatures to be completed, maybe by the end of May.

The launch of this project is also symbolic. It will be a significant moment as it will be the first major project of the new decade, the first to be signed by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, but also the first in the post-coronavirus era.

The contractor is AKTOR company which undertakes the project with a discount rate that reaches 51%. The project includes two sections: the first is Aktio-Aghios Nikolaos and the second is Vonitsa-Lefkada.

The contracting authority is the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. It basically concerns the upgrading of 2 existing sections of expressways with 1+1 lanes per direction.

This is the most important road project for the wider area as it will increase the level of road safety in the connection of Lefkada island with Aktio Airport (from where dozens of tourist flights land from all over Europe) but also with the Ionian and Amvrakia Motorways. The project also includes the construction of a new water supply pipeline that is expected to solve the issue of water supply on the island.

The cost of the project is 48.1m euros (incl. VAT, VAT excl.: 39.51m euros). The duration of the project is set at 34 months, i.e. a little less than 3 years.

This practically means that if the construction works start in the summer, they could be completed around this time of the year, in 2023 (and as long as there are no delays in the construction phase). The road project is funded by the NSRF.
