The consultant for the installation of electronic tolls on the motorway of Crete, better known as VOAK, is getting a job. By decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the company Invision Consulting SA will be the one to undertake the development of the plan for electronic tolls.

This is deemed imperative as it will ensure a fair system based on which the user will pay per kilometer and not per toll station regardless of the exit they use. Olympia Odos already uses the “fair” toll system for its e-pass users.

This move comes before the start of the large contracts for the construction of the closed highway so that there is technical provision in the part of the infrastructure of the highway and especially in the mechanical systems that must be installed.

Let us remind you that of the three sections, the Neapolis-Agios Nikolaos (AKTOR) project is under construction, while the signature is also expected for the Hersonissos-Neapolis section (GEK TERNA-AKTOR CONCESSIONS-INTRAKAT). The works on the main section Chania-Heraklion-Hersonissos are estimated to start in 2024.

What does the toll advisor take over

The scope of the service includes a total of five categories:

1.«Recording the characteristics of the project based on the planned layout and the toll stations of each section, taking into account the particularities of each area in relation to the operation of electronic tolls.

  1. Determination of the user groups that the highway will serve and the particularities they have in relation to the operation and use of the highway, whose needs the system will be called upon to serve (visitors, residents, professionals, rental vehicles, etc. .).
  2. Conducting an exploratory telephone survey to record public opinion and basic characteristics of those benefiting from the construction and operation of the highway.
  3. Correlation of the recorded needs with the existing infrastructure and operation of the remaining highways in our country.
  4. Recording and presentation of the international experience in relation to the service of the operational needs that have been identified”.

VOAK, as the country’s newest highway, will have all the new technologies integrated, and this also applies in the field of tolls. With electronic tolls, the driver does not stop at regular intervals but is recorded at the entrance and exit from the motorway in order to be charged electronically to pay the corresponding price.

Let’s remember that VOAK concerns the Chania-Heraklion-Agios Nikolaos section. An option has also been provided for the inclusion of the Chania-Kissamos section, while the inclusion of the Agios Nikolaos-Siteia section is also being considered.

What applies today on the Greek highways

Until today, on the Greek toll highways, the driver pays in advance at each toll station the distance he will travel to the next station.

That is, he pays a fixed amount which covers a route that can be between 20-40 kilometers. Side tolls have the same role. That’s how tolls started anyway for over 10 years. On Attiki Odos, a fixed amount is also paid regardless of kilometers.

With electronic tolls, the charge becomes more transparent and the driver-user will pay exactly the amount due to him, depending on the distance. In short, someone will pay another amount to go from Heraklion to Rethymno and another – greater due to the distance – from Heraklion to Chania.

The charge today on the Greek motorway network is fixed at approximately 0.063 cents/km. It should be clarified that the difference between the system and the electronic one is not particularly big as most of the toll stations are relatively close to each other.

It is also a myth that the location of many toll stations brings more costs to the user. This depends entirely on how many major exit junctions a motorway has and how many of them have side tolls. In other words, even if a 300-kilometer axis (such as VOAK) has 30 or 50 toll stations, this does not make a difference in the driver’s pocket, but has to do with his controlled entrance and exit from the highway.
