Significant infrastructure project completions are expected by the end of the year. The series of inaugurations began with the delivery of the Ambraikos Road axis (Aktio-Ambraikos) at the end of January, continued with the Kalloni-Sigri axis in Lesbos, and progressed with the commissioning of the E65 section from Lamia to Kalambaka (new sections Lamia-Xyniada and Trikala-Kalambaka).
However, 2024 also includes other very significant project deliveries. The most important of all is -finally- the year of the Thessaloniki Metro. This is indicated by both the construction consortium and the Greek Metro. The estimated month for the inauguration of the new system will be November of the coming year, so we are entering an informal countdown.
The New Railway Station-New Switzerland line was contracted as far back as 2006, underwent crises, company bankruptcies, reactions from local authorities, municipal opposition, and dozens of appeals to the Council of State. In our collective memory, it will remain as a project that we would never want to see repeated and, most importantly, it would be beneficial to learn from as a case study in how public projects should not be implemented.
The 15 stations and 9.6 kilometers represent the beginning of the Metro network, with the extension to Kalamaria planned for 2025 (God willing). More specifically, the stations expected to operate are: Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos, Dimokratias, Venizelou, Agia Sofia, Sindrivani, Panepistimio, Papafi, Eukleidi, Fleming, Analipseos, 25is Martiou, Voulgari, Nea Elvetia.
This year, we will witness the delivery of several major projects as well as some smaller ones that are of great significance to the region where they are being implemented. It should be clarified that this year marks the official start of the National Strategic Reference Framework 2014-2020 (NSRF) program.
Financing from the National Strategic Reference Framework 2014-2020 (NSRF) program was completed in 2023, and from this year onward, we have the new European funding framework as a reference point for project financing.
In the coming period, likely in June, we expect the full operation of the Piraeus Tower, an iconic project for the city. TERNA, on behalf of Dimand, is completing the reconstruction of the tower, and already we have the first shops operating. The Tower will fully reopen after 47 years.
After the summer, we are anticipating two significant project deliveries. The first is the completion of the Double Connection of Lefkada (the axis from Agios Nikolaos has already been delivered), and the new indoor sports arena in Nea Smyrni.
In 2024, there will be other major project deliveries, this time in the energy sector: The Komotini Power Generation Unit by TERNA-Motor Oil will be completed, along with natural gas expansions in Chalkida, Thebes, Katerini-Alexandria, Lamia, Xanthi-Drama, and Komotini-Alexandroupolis.
In terms of local road projects, the project of Egnatia Odos S.A. from Diamario to the borders stands out. Additionally, we are awaiting the completion of projects in Lesbos, Delta-Karditsa, the completion of the Alexandroupoli Ring Road, and Trikala-Karavoporo.
According to the schedules, we expect the completion of several waste management units in cities of the Region. Specifically, in Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Western Thessaly, and also in the Hersonissos area in Crete.
During the year, we also anticipate the completion of urban flood protection projects, such as flood control works in Rema Eschatias, Rema Giannoulas, Kanapitsa, and Agios Georgios, as well as projects in Varkiza-Voula-Vouliagmeni, among others.
