Trial operation for the electrified itineraries between Athens and Tithorea is still underway. According to information provided at Ypodomes.com, till the end of May all necessary tests will have been completed allowing Athens-Thessaloniki train itinerary to shorten in terms of time, although becoming ab bit more complicated.

More specifically, electric trains will be starting from Athens, all the way to Tithorea (110, tiresome for many, km). In Tithorea, there will be an engine swap (switch to a diesel engine) up to Domokos Station, where the electric engine will be replacing once again (for the last time) the diesel engine all the way to the train’s final destination, in Thessaloniki. Time distance will be reduced to roughly 5 hours and 20 minutes.

Further time distance reduction in the end of 2017

Till the end of 2017, time distance for the itinerary of Athens-Thessaloniki will be reduced even more as a considerable, new railway section between Tithorea and Lianokladi with a length of 54 km will become operational. Time distance will then drop to 4 hours and 30 minutes.

In the end of 2018, when the project of the railway line upgrade will be completed, time distance will be just 3 hours and 25 minutes. Among the advantages of the project is the rapid transportation of passengers from Athens to Thessaloniki city centers, with a competitive cost always compared to intercity buses and airplanes.

What is left to be answered though is Ferrovie’s stance when it will assume control of the company. Which promises will be kept and which decisions will be followed, aiming for the railway’s smooth operation, are yet to be seen.
