Greek Prime Minister, Mr Alexis Tsipras, speaking in the end of the 9th Regional Conference for the Development of Western Greece, made an extensive reference to the design of the new railway line in the city of Patras from Aghios Dionysios area to the New Port. He also announced that the tender for the project concerning the underground route of the train with a double-track, electrified line from Kanellopoulou Street to Aghios Dionysios (which will operate as the line’s terminal and main railway station), using cut&cover method, will come out in 2018.

This, as Mr Tsipras pointed out, was made possible after exhausting consultation with the local authorities. “New factors have also come into play as the passage of the railway line after the concession of the city’s coastal front to the local authorities by the Central Government. A promise that many have given but only we have managed delivered”. “Through this consultation we have reached an optimal solution, both for the city and its citizens and from a technical point of view”, he added.

For the continuation of the project, the Greek PM said that studies will commence for the underground passage of the train from Aghios Dionysios to Aghios Andreas areas and its connection with the New Port, up to the point of Piraiki-Patraiki, the existing line to Pyrgos as well as the creation of a Tram network linking the Patras’ Western suburbs with the center and, of course, the train.

The cost of the underground project from Kanellopoulou Street to Aghios Dionysios, with a double-track electrified line, including its signaling systems, has been estimated at 130mio euros, while its funding has been secured through NSRF.
