2018 is the anticipated year of “resurrection” for the constructions sector of the country. After 4 years of drought and just a few new auctioned projects, the forthcoming year, according to the announcements of the implementing entities, will bring many new projects and a more sustainable environment for the industry.

Today Ypodomes.com brings you top-ranked new generation projects, in terms of scope size and budget, from the expected “boom”.  These are:

Crete’s Northern Motorway Axis (aka VOAK)

It will be the largest project to be auctioned in 2018. It concerns the construction of a new, covered motorway between Chania and Aghios Nikolaos. Sometime in the beginning of next year, the Call for Expression of Interest will be published, which will signify the beginning of the tender (that will take about 1.5 years to bed completed).

The cost is estimated at 1.5bn euros. Funding sources include EIB, private funds and perhaps partial participation from the State. All these will be determined by the terms of the tender and the offers of the investors.

Electrical Interconnection of Peloponnese and Crete

The second largest project with a cost of 360mio euros. The Environmental Impact Stydy has already been approved. The interconnection concerns the installation of an underwater, double AC power cable (2×200 MW) that will connect the island of Crete with the mainland’s electricity grid. Funding will be covered by NSRF 2014-2020.

Ionian Motorway’s extension from Ioannina to Kakavia

The third largest and most dubious project until now is the famous extension of Ionian Motorway between Ioannina and Kakavia. It is a 340-mio-euro project, for 34 additional km for the section Ioannina-Kalpaki. Funding is still being sought by EIB.

Chalkida Detour

The fourth largest project is Chalkida Detour with a budget of around 230mio euros. According to the latest available information, the project will be funded by EIB in the immediate future. It concerns the construction of a covered 2-lane (per direction) motorway of 17 km that will start from the big suspended bridge and will end at Psachna.

Amvrakia Motorway

It concerns a “broom contract” for the completion of the “spin-off” road of Ionian Motorway axis to the town of Preveza. It will be a covered motorway and the cost is estimated at 165mio euros. It is a phasing project that is funded by NSRF.

Athens New Intercity Buses Terminal

Next in line is one of the so-called “maquette projects”. We refer to the construction of Athens’ New Intercity Buses Terminal in Eleonas that will replace the existing, outdated Terminals in Kifissos and Liosion Ave. The estimated cost is 150mio euros and, for the first time, there is a serious chance for its tender to go through in 2018. Funding will be covered with private funds and, perhaps, a partial contribution from EIB.

New Cruise Ships’ Pier in Piraeus

The 7th largest project with an estimated cost of approximately 130mio euros. Implementing entity of the project is Piraeus Port Authority (PPA). Its funding is covered by NSRF 2014-2020.

Thriassion Plain Logistics Center (aka Thriassion 2)

The 8th largest tender concerns the construction of a Freight Logistics Center in Thriassion Plain, in Attica region. It is an entirely private investment, estimated at 100mio euros. The implementing entity is OSE.

Mall in Thessaloniki’s Central Railway Station

Concerns the construction of a Shopping Center in Thessaloniki’s Central Railway Station. This is a privately funded concession project and an investment of roughly 100mio euros. Implementing entity is GAIAOSE.

Electrification of Kiato-Rododafni railway section

The electrification of Kiato-Rododafni railway line by ERGOSE is a project that is expected to come out in the next 2 months. It is budgeted at around 70mio euros and its funding is secured by NSRF 2014-2020.
