The great possibilities created by the country’s new motorway network are just starting to unfold. The big winner of this emerging reality is undoubtedly the logistics sector that has just started to show its potential. The relevant industry claims that it already has a share of 11% GDP (according to a survey by EEL) and that, this share is going to rise even more in the next few years.

The construction of Thriasio Plain Logistics Center in Aspropyrgos area, is just a few months away of its operation. Plenty of land is about to follow the same example around Greece as Thessaloniki and Igoumenitsa are already in process of implementing or tendering new freight centers. The Ministry of Infrastructure itself is promoting new facilities in Alexandroupolis, Larissa and Patras.

Nevertheless, the aformentioned projects concern what the central Government does for the logistics sector. Major moves are also taking place in the private sector, as in November the multinational giant of the industry, GEMCO will announce its activities in the country, while many other companies from Europe are in search of real estate to build their own warehouses.

For its part, the Greek Logistics Company asks for a Special Secretariat responsible for managing the emerging industry more quickly and more efficiently. These moves, of course, are combined with the development of Piraeus’ and Thessaloniki’s Ports, which will assume the role stategic poles, suitable for rapid transportation of containers and goods to the markets of Central, Northern and Eastern Europe.

The full acceleration of the Logistics’ sector development is expected with the completion of Piraeus-Thessaloniki-Edomeni railway corridor’s upgrade works, which, according to the latest information, is a matter of just one year.
