Greece recently achieved the absorption of a substantial 61mn euros (out of 2.7bn euros in total) from Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) tool for the implementation of important infrastructure projects.

The most important project is the undergrounding of a quadruple railway line (aka Sepolia Railway Tunnel) with a length of 3.1 km between Athens Central Railway Station and “3 Bridges” interchange right at the borderline of the municipality, with 40363,249 million euros.

This step is considered to be crucial for the tender’s initiation and verifies relevant previous reports of Ypodomes.com. The overall budget is estimated at 109mn euros and works are expected to last roughly 3 years. It is noteworthy that during the construction phase, the existing line will continue its operation uninhibitedly.

Another 2 vital railway projects are also funded by CEF: Tithorea-Domokos railway line upgrade on PAThE corridor and infrastructure works for Rododafni-Psathopyrgos section in Peloponnese. The undergrounding of the railway line running through central Athens, will reverse the bisection of ran-down neighbourhoods, will improve safety dramatically and will allow trains moving faster within the urban grid.

The project’s implementation will finally satisfy the demands raised at least 15 years ago by Athens municipality, local residents and the “railway family”. The overall length of the undergrounding will be 2.36 km and must be carried out with surgical precision as along the way it crosses with Athens’ main water pipe.

Other projects of CEF

Apart from this project though, our country has secured additional funding for other important projects as it is mentioned above:

– Polykastro-Idomeni railway line upgrade and electrification concluding the axis connecting Thessaloniki with the borders to FYROM: 7,093,100 euros

– Design-development and implementation of TAF/TAF-TSI system on Thessaloniki-Athens-Piraeus corridor and Athens-Patra-Igoumenitsa (software-hardware development): 2,997,702 euros

– Study for 13 trial CNG stations located on the Greek road network of Orient East Mediterranean Corridor intended to refuel vehicles running on natural gas: 4,544,150 euros

– Initiation of SESAR programme: 5,679,010 euros
