Funding for E65 Motorway’s northern section about to be secured

Negotiations regarding the funding of E65 Motorway’s northern section (i.e. Trikala – Egnatia) are proceeding really well, according to reliable information. In fact, in the Ministry of Infrastructure it is believed that funding deal with EIB could be finalized even within a short period of time (perhaps until the beginning of 2019).

If required action is taken and the 400m euros, which is the estimated cost of the projects, is found, then it will most likely follow the steps of the southern section. That is, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will assign the construction to TERNA SA, then the contract should be re-sent to the Commission services for approval (DG Move and DG Comp), the Court of Audit and finally for ratification in the Greek Parliament.

It is noteworthy that negotiations are at a very advanced stage, especially because of the positive outcome, by the European Commission, for the construction of  Lamia – Ksyniada section.

The Commission review is expected to be significantly shorter, given the recent approval and that no funds are used by NSRF 2014-2020. Until now, E65 holds the “record” of multiple reviews by tge Commission as it has been submitted so far, according to sources of ypodomes.com, 4 times in total.

The construction of the northern section will complete the construction of the E65 Motorway. Trikala – Egnatia section will have a length of about 65 km, it will have 2 lanes per direction (+emergency lane) and its environmental licensing has been approved. The construction period is estimated to last about 3 years.
