Fraport, which operates Frankfurt Airport, has awarded a contract to a consortium of Siemens, Max Bögl Group and Keolis to build, operate and maintain a new fully-automated Airval peoplemover to serve the new Terminal 3.

The €300m contract covers the construction of the peoplemover, and its operation and maintenance for five years, with an option to extend this for another five years. The 5.6km double-track peoplemover will have three stations and will link Terminal 3 with the existing Terminals 2 and 1. It will connect with the existing peoplemover serving the Terminals 1 and 2, at an interchange station at Terminal 2.

Siemens will supply 12 two-car Val trains equipped with Siemens’ Trainguard MT CBTC system designed for the GoA4 level of automation. Siemens will also supply lineside equipment, platform screen doors, communications, power supply, and depot equipment.

Construction is scheduled to start in middle of this year. When the peoplemover opens in 2023, trains will operate at 120-second headways during peak periods, and the line will have capacity to transport 4000 passengers/hour/direction.
