SYRIZA MP, Mrs Theodora Tzakri submitted a question to the Parliament regarding the extension of Thessaloniki Suburban Railway to Giannitsa and Edessa. The text of the question states that the project is feasible and “tempting” since it will interconnect adjacent areas to Thessaloniki with its metropolitan center.

Mrs. Tzakri reminds that for this reason a feasibility study has been prepared since 2007, but needed to be updated, and during SYRIZA Government important preliminary studies were carried out by OSE aiming to the inclusion of both the final study and the construction of the specific project in a funding facility.

The project for the extension of Western Suburban Railway of Thessaloniki to Giannitsa and Edessa, will connect Giannitsa by rail with Thessaloniki, serving at the same time all the intermediate towns (Chalkidona, Koufalia, Aghios Athanasios, etc.) and should be one of the country’s prioritized railway projects, after Athens-Thessaloniki railway axis.

On April 9, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport appointed a Coordinating Committee for Railway Projects with the task to present an action plan in three stages.

The Coordinating Committee will finally suggest to the Minister, among other things, which new railway projects will be included in the Region of Central Macedonia in the new programming period of NSRF (2021 – 2027) and will propose a new mechanism for the implementation of railway projects.

Mrs Tzakri, asks to find out if the project of expanding the Suburban Railway of Thessaloniki is in priority among the new railway projects and with what actions it will be possible to include the studies in a european financial program (NSRF, CEF, etc.).
