A current question regarding the extension of Athens Metro Line 2 was submitted on May 16th, by MP, Mr. Dimitrios Karras of New Democracy party. As mentioned in the question’s document, the above project that provides for the construction of 3 new stations, remains of first priority for the local govenrment, given that from 2013, all necessary studies have been completed.

Mr. Karras supports that funding for the construction of the project was earlier secured by NSRF 2014-2020, but he did not proceed as Line 4 was prioritized. With his question, the MP seeks an answer on whether the major extension project will be finally unblocked the expansion and if there is a specific auction time frame.

Metro Line 2 extension to Ilion

The extension project of Athens Metro Line 2 from Anthoupoli to Ilion with 3 new stations has been present in Attiko Metro’s agenda since the end of the previous decade. The 3 new stations are all located within the administrative boundaries of Ilion Municipality. The first two will be situated on Thivon Avenue:  PALATIANI (Thivon Ave. and Kappadokias Str.), ILION (Thivon Ave. and Elaion Ave.) while the terminal will be near the border with Kamatero Municipality and its name will probably be AGHIOS NIKOLAOS (Aghiou Nikolaou Ave. and Paramythias Str.).

Its cost is estimated at about 400m euros and will be 4 km long, serving 51,000 passengers on a daily basis, putting the Metro network even deeper into the city’s northwest suburbs. In its final form, Line 2 is planned to reach even further north, up to Attiki Motorway, where a hub will be created as the Metro will be connected to the existing ZEFYRI Suburban Railway Station.
