The cost for the new electronic tolling system was set at 400mio euros (VAT incl.). According to a decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport dated at 18.1.2018, the above amount was awarded for an international tender regarding the selection of the contractor for the project. The date of the tender is still unknown but it is estimated to take place around March.
The scope of the project includes the design, financing, procurement, installation and commissioning of an integrated and proportional electronic and satellite tolling system for the entirety of the country’s motorway network, with the inclusion of the, currently State-owned- Egnatia Motorway and its vertical axes.
The main goal is for the new system to be fully operational by the end of 2018 charrging road users based on mileage, making the collection of the tolls, “socially acceptable while safeguarding the public interest”, the Ministry’s document states.
For their part, concessionaires of the motorways are required to submit a study on the further development of the new tolling system “taking into account the financial equilibrium of the project and the need to avoid any unfavorable changes in the financial results”, among others. According to the Ministry’s plans, budget will be distributed as follows: 100mio eurow in 2018, 270mio euros in 2019, 10.5mio euros in 2020, 10mio euros in 2021 and 10mio euros in 2022.
