The contract regarding the concession period extension of Athens International Airport “El. Venizelos” passed successfully from the Greek Parliament’s Financial Affairs Committee. Tne first contract was signed on July 31, 1995, with the next step being its ratification from the Assembly, giving the green light for the extension of the agreement until June 11, 2046 for the price of 1.15bn euros (excl. VAT, VAT incl. 1.38bn euros).

The concessionaire will be summoned to pay the above sum one-off to HRADF, making for the second largest transaction after the one of Fraport Greece for the 14 Regional Airports. With the completion of the contract extension process, the announcement of the plan for the significant investments regarding the large-scale expansion of Athens Airport infrastructure is expected to come quite soon. 

New increase in passenger traffic in January 2019

At the same time, another increase was recorded in January in AIA’s passenger traffic. According to published data released by the Airport, a positive trend was recorded in the first month of the year, marking an increase of 8.5% to 1.39, passengers. Both domestic and international passengers rose by 7.9% and 8.7% respectively. More specifically, domestic passengers reached 449,758, while international passengers 943,334.
