The contract for the large-scale railway project regarding the construction of Sepolia Underground Railway Tunnel was signed yesterday at ERGOSE’s headquarters, confirming fully the report of ypodomes.com.

The project which concerns the undergrounding of the existing line between Athens Central Railway Station and “3 Bridges” area, right at the northwestern borders of Athens municipality, where it will be connected to the newly constructed and operational railway section, had been announced on 28/12/2017, budgeted, according to the project study, at 122m euros. The contractor of the project is INTRAKAT – SIDIRODROMIKA ERGA ATE J/V, with the average discount being 45.71% (the offer was 66.580.539,74 euros). The duration of the construction phase, according to the contract, is set at 52 months. The project is co-funded by the Connecting Europe facility (CEF).

The project’s scope concerns the construction of a quadruple, electrified railway line  with a length of 2.36 km, from which 1,91 km will be underground. The new railway corridor will be of double cross-section. The eastward railway corridor will be serving the movement of suburban trains, while the westward intercity trains. The New Double Rail Line is built on the existing traffic zone gradually – first the West Corridor and then the East.

It is noteworthy that there is a provision for the uninhibited operation of the existing lines, during the construction phase of the underground tunnel. Upon the completion of the western part of the tunnel, trains will be transferred to the first 2 underground lines. The eastern part will be then removed, in order for the 2 remaining underground lines to be constructed, that will also conclude the project. Tunnelling works will require “surgical precision” as they pass between the existing Metro Tunnel of Line 2 and the city’s main water pipe.
