The contract for constructing a new mega Cycle Path along the Athens Riviera was signed yesterday in the presence of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to the Prime Minister, ZITAKAT will carry out the project, which is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025.

The Recovery Fund funds the project, which involves the construction of a bicycle path and pedestrian walkway connecting the Athenian Riviera from the “Esplanade” in Moschato to the Town Hall of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni. The Region of Attica is the contracting authority.

The project’s budget is 19.13 million euros, and it has been included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) under the title “SUB3. Athenian Riviera.” The new bicycle path and pedestrian walkway, along with the accompanying redevelopment works, will run along the following route:

  • 365 meters in the Municipality of Kallithea
  • 3,752 meters in the Municipality of Palaio Faliro
  • 1,563 meters in the Municipality of Alimos
  • 2,817 meters in the Municipality of Elliniko (in two sections of 1,048 meters and 1,769 meters each)
  • 821 meters in the Municipality of Glyfada (as the remaining section in the Municipality has already been completed)
  • 2,646 meters in the Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni

Mitsotakis: A precious project for the Athenian Riviera

“A concept that seemed very obvious at the time. Is it possible to have this unique coastal front and not have a way to traverse it from one end to the other? Perhaps even we did not realize the very great difficulties that had to be overcome to turn the project from an idea into a funded project with a timeline for implementation,” stated Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the signing of the construction contract for the “Athenian Riviera” project.

The Prime Minister said the project will be ready by September 2025 or 2-3 months later. “I was reading an article in the Financial Times about the Athenian Riviera. Indeed, the developmental impact is very significant and not at the expense of local communities,” Mr. Mitsotakis noted.

He emphasized that the Hellinikon project was an idea the government inherited and is now in the implementation phase. “We want to ensure that development will not be at the expense of the local residents,” he stressed.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke about the project’s importance for the quality of life in all the coastal municipalities. “We need more bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways in combination with the great emphasis we are placing on upgrading public transportation,” he noted, mentioning the new electric buses in Athens and the increased frequency of routes.

“We will closely monitor the project’s implementation and are committed to being here at the inauguration to ride through it on a bicycle, which I prefer as a cyclist. First and foremost, it will enhance the quality of life for the residents,” Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized.
