Barcelona metro operator TMB has signed an agreement with a group of Korean companies and technological institutions to carry out trials with vertically-opening platform screen doors at one of its stations.

The Vertical Platform Screen Door System (VPSD) provides a much wider access space than conventional horizontal sliding platform screen doors. This means it is not necessary for the train to stop at a precise position and a variety of rolling stock door spacings can be accommodated. This makes VPSD suitable for lines used by more than one type of train.

The door modules produced by STraffic, Korea, will be installed in the second half of this year on the infrequently-used platform 1 at Can Cuiás station, the northern terminus of Line 11. The system will undergo reliability and operational integration testing for a period of at least six months. If the performance of the system proves satisfactory, VPSD will be trialled with passengers in commercial operations.
