Construction works for the extension of Athens’ tramway from Faliro to the centre and the port of Piraeus are almost completed. According to safe information provided at Ypodomes.com, what is left to be completed now is a 300-meter-long section from Vas. Georgiou and Iroon Politechniou intersection to the end of Posidonos Coast.

Archaeological surveys are still underway in this section and it is estimated that the site will be fully released in October. The completion of 11 stops of Tram’s network has also initiated, starting from Lambraki Bridge up to the height of Omiridou Skilitsi St. The stops are expected to be fully completed by the end of the year.

The last but remarkable construction project of the extension is the Substation that will start being built at the “Clock Square” in the immediate future and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2018.

Trial operation to start in early 2018

The most important fact is that the construction works of the tramway’s extension, that has been burdening the city for, roughly, 4 years, is now under completion with the last construction sites being gradually released while Piraeus acquires a refreshed image, with new pavements, underground bins and parking spaces.

In the beginning of 2018, immediately after the completion of the construction phase, trial operation of the new Tram line will commence, setting the commercial availability of the line just a few months later, during the Summer of 2018.

The most important stops of the network will be the terminal of Posidonos Coast, about 100 meters from Piraeus’ Metro Station and the Suburban Railway’ Station, the Town Hall’s Station which will afterwards be connected to the forthcoming Metro Station “Dimotiko Theatro” (Municipal Theatre) of Line 3. Peace and Friendship Stadium (current terminal)-Posidonos Coast distance is estimated to be covered in 7 minutes.
