Athens Metro: tender for Line 2 extension to the Western suburbs moved to April

A second extension was granted by Attiko Metro to the tender concerning the extension of line 2 of the Athens Metro to Ilion. More specifically, the Board of Directors of the company decided to move the expression of interest from March 17 to April 12 and to open the participation files on April 20. The main reason is extension requests as stated in the decision is for fuller participation in the upcoming competition.

The extension of the Metro to Ilion is currently the only tendered contract for the metropolitan railway of Athens. The cost with VAT is 682 million euros (amount without VAT 550 million euros). The contracting authority of the project is Attiko Metro.

The duration of the project is a little less than 5 years, i.e. 57 months from the day of signing the contract. According to the announcement, the expected number of participants is up to 7 schemes.

The competition will take place in two stages: the first stage is the pre-selection-invitation of expression of interest by submitting an application for participation. Stage B is the call for tenders and the assignment of the project.

The scope of the contract includes the study and construction of three separate objects:

1. a) the extension of the Line to Ilion, approximately 4km long, with 3 new stations: PALATIANI, ILION, AGIOS NIKOLAOS, as well as the corresponding ventilation shafts as well as a Transfer Station
2. b) the expansion of the Eleonas Depot
3. c) the upgrade-replacement of existing E/M systems of lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro

The project has been included in the TPA INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT of the national PDE (project number: 2022NA47100061) and is then scheduled to be included in the EP. “TRANSPORTS” of the new Programming Period “NSRF 2021-2027”.

In detail what is planned to be built

The Line 2 Extension to Ilion project includes the preparation of the Final Design, the Implementation Design, the construction of the Civil Engineering works, the procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of the electromechanical and railway equipment, the maintenance of the Project, the training of the personnel and the supply of the main spare parts for the systems to be installed.

The extension is approximately 4 km long and includes three new Stations and their corresponding Ventilation Shafts. The object also includes the construction of a Transfer Station, which has three (3) underground levels with access via ramps, has a total capacity of approximately 150 vehicles with a direct passenger connection to the Metro.

Extension of Eleonas Depot

The project of the Extension of Line 2 to Ilion includes the preparation of the Final Study, the Implementation Study, the construction of the extension of the Eleonas Depot in an area adjacent to the existing Depot, which is located at the corner of Agia Annis Street with Pierias street.

Upgrade – Replacement of Existing Lines 2 & 3 Systems

In the context of this contract, the digital data transmission system will be upgraded / replaced in all the stations of Lines 2 & 3 of the Metro, while the announcement system will be upgraded / replaced in the stations of the Basic Project and the extensions (except the Piraeus extension) and will be connected to the corresponding systems of the Piraeus extension.
