The decade’s biggest tender is finally active. Information provided at Ypodomes.com by Attiko Metro, indicate that the tender for Athens’ new Metro Line 4 has been issued. Metro Line 4 will be the biggest construction project in Athens in a period of 30 years, as with an estimated cost of 1.5bn euros, it will exceed the project size of Metro Lines 2 and 3 in 1992. The constructions sector both in the interior and abroad is expected to show a keen interest for the project.

Early hints suggest that the first phase of the tender concerning the pre-selection of the interested parties will take place on June 30, 2017. The procedure is quite long and the qualified schemes will be called to submit their technical and, subsequently, financial proposals one year later.

If everything goes as planned, construction works will commence in 2019 and will last roughly 8 years (without counting in possible archaeological excavations that will delay the scheduled delivery).

The project has secured funds by NSRF 2014-2020, as high as 450mn euros while the rest will be covered by EIB, which, for the first time, finances a large-scale infrastructure project in our country with a 75% participation.

The anatomy of Metro Line 4

The new Metro Line 4 (Veikou Grove-Goudhi) will change dramatically the way Athenians move around the city as it will be serving very densely populated areas of the center and neighbouring municipalities.

Starting from Veikou Grove it will be passing from Galatsi, Kipseli, Ghizi, Eksarhia, Kolonaki, Ilisia, Zografou to terminate in Goudhi area. With a length of 12.9 km it will be featuring 14 underground stations, 9 of which within Athens municipality.

Interchange stations will be Akadimia (connection with Panepistimio Station/Line2 via an underground path) and Evangelismos (connection with Line 3). For the Line’s construction, 2 TBMs will be used while there is also a provision for a third one if it is considered necessary.

Metro Line 4 will be designed and constructed based on modern and technologically advanced characteristics with a central, two-way tunnel and platform safety gates that will be opening upon trains’ arrivals. Trains will be also fully automatic and driverless.

The contract of the project will be including all relevant works and procedures from civil engineering works to electrification and signaling systems installations as well as trains’ procurement (14 in total). It will, undoubtedly, be a “golden” contract that will attract many and powerful contenders.

The Stations of the Metro Line 4 will be:

– Veikou Grove

– Galatsi

– Kipseli

– Dikastiria

– Aleksandras

– Eksarhia

– Akadimia

– Kolonaki

– Evangelismos

– Kesariani

– Near East

– Ilisia

– Zografou

– Ghoudi

Among others, the scope of the project includes the tunnels’ ventilation systems, railway superstructure works and smart e-ticketing system installation in all 14 stations. It is noteworthy that this project is just the first step of Metro Line 4’s development, which later on will grow further to reach a length of 30 km in total with 5 more station to the Northwest of Athens.
