Another slight postponement is expected -for just a few days- regarding the tender for the construction of Athens Metro Line 4 (Also Veikou-Goudi section), caused by clarifying questions set by the interested parties. Even though one of the contenders requested a lengthy postponement, Attiko Metro made clear that it will not allow the tender to stagnate due to multiple delays, rescheduling it, according to safe information, for the end of July 2017.

It is reminded that Athens Metro Line 4 is the biggest metro-related project the country has seen so far as it exceeds in terms of scope and budget both Lines 2 and 3, tendered back in the early 1990s.

This of course has caused the increased interest of paramount construction companies on a local and European level as well as companies involved in electromechanical equipment and trains’ procurement.

Powerful alliances being formed

The buzz about the joint ventures that would pursue the project of Line 4 went as far as the scenario of all Greek, first-class companies joining forces, which doesn’t seem to be the case though according to our report.

The joint ventures that seem to be emerging so far are: TERNA-VINCI-SIEMENS, AKTOR-ANSALDOBREDA and J&P AVAX-GHELLA and ALSTOM. Especially the composition of the first J/V is quite a surprise as AKTOR-VINCI have been long-standing “allies” that have now parted ways. METKA, Salini-Impregilo and Hochtief have not yet made their intentions clear while there is also Chinese interest that cannot safely be interpreted as an official participation in the tender, at least for the time being.

Foreign companies are considered to be necessary as they will be able to meet the budget demands. Regarding trains’ procurement and electromechanical equipment, Siemens, Alstom and Hyundai-Rotem have expressed keen interest and are expected to be decisive in the formation of the joint ventures and the nature of the technical and economic offers that will open in 2018.

Line 4 will be different than Lines 2 and 3; it will be featuring safety doors on the 110-metre-long platforms, opening upon trains’ arrivals and fully automatic, driverless trains, like Thessaloniki. The new line will be serving densely populated areas of the capital passing from: Galatsi, Kipseli, Gizi, Alexandras Ave., Exarchia, Kolonaki, Ilisia, Zografou, Kesariani to end in Goudi just a few hundred metres from Mesogion Ave.
