The most difficult part of Athens Metro Line 3 extension project is undoubtedly Piraeus Station. This was, in fact, the main reason that the project’s operation was split in 2 “instalments”. The delays of the excavation process is largely due to the relocation of the station due to the finding of EYDAP’s (the capital’s water and sewage company) main pipeline as well missiles from World War II.

However, given that these setbacks have been overcome, excavation works are now progressing faster, well-informed sources told ypodomes.com. Most struts are now in place and if everything goes as planned, it is estimated that in the first quarter of 2019 the process will be completed.

Shortly after, construction works for the underground station will begin, which are expected to last for about 1 year. The last step will be the installation of the station’s electromechanical equipment in order for it to be released to operation sometime in 2021.

An important factor for the timely delivery of the project are superstructure works (track laying works). It is noted that the other 2 stations of the extension’s second half, Maniatikak and Dimotiko Theatro are at a more advanced stage of construction.

Scheduled project delivery of the extension

The first 3 stations of Athens Metro Line 3 extension, which currently streches up to Aghia Marina Station, is being prepared to be released to operation, according to officials of Attiko Metro and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, by June 2019 and reach Piraeus. These first 3 stations to be delivered are: Aghia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikea.

The second “instalment” of the extension’s delivery is expected in 2021. It will includes the following 3 (and most strategic) stations: Maniatika, Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro. This section of the extension will link the port and the center of Piraeus to the center of Athens and other important transport infrastructure of Attica such as the Airport and Athens Central Railway Station.

When completed, Piraeus Station will contribute to the transformation of the area t to the largest public transportation hub in Attica with 2 Metro station and connections with the Suburban Railway, the Tram, buses, trolley buses and, of course, the Port.
