One of the first major projects to be implemented in Athens International Airport “El. Venizelos”, as a result of its investment program aiming to accommodate the ever-increasing passenger traffic and comply with the new regulations, regarding passport controls, is set to begin in 2018.

More particularly, according to secure information provided at Ypodomes.com, by next year another 12,000 sq.m. of will be added to AIA’s building complex. It will be a three-story building that will serve the needs of the Airport until it reaches 26mio passengers which is the maximum capacity for the current infrastructure. The cost is estimated to be around 25mio euros.

According to the plan, the works are expected to start next Summer, when passenger traffic of the Airport reaches 90% of its “maximum limit” (i.e. 23.4mio passengers).

For now, there is no complete picture of the investment size, but it will be a set of large-scale projects with increased budget, judging from other, similar cases of Airports with suchlike growth (e.g. Copenhagen).

Passenger traffic for 2017 is estimated between 21.5-21.7mio passengers with very positive forecasts for 2018, as new routes by Aegean, Ryanair and Wizzair (who aspires to be the third-largest airliner of the Airport) will be inaugurated, among others.

What remains to be clarified now, it when and how large this investment will be, as it concerns one of the largest infrastructure projects in the coming year, both for Attica and the country more generally.
