Champion not only in Greece but also in the Balkans is the International Airport of Athens , “Eleftherios Venizelos”. The international airport in the capital of our country has managed to stride in the past years, skyrocketing its traffic which, in the last year exceeded for the first time, the threshold of 20mnn passengers.
The domination of the Greek airport is overwhelming, as in 2016, the second best performance was recorded in “Henri Coanda” Airport in Bucharest with 10,982,967 passengers.
The third place is occupied by Sofia’s evolving airport with 4,980,387 passengers and the fourth place by Belgrade’s Airport “Nikola Tesla” with 4,924,992 passengers. Zagreb’s Airport “Franjo Tucman” completes the top-five with 2,776,087 passengers.
The last three airports, in terms of traffic, in the Balkan Peninsula, are Tirana “Mother Teresa” Airport with 2,195,100 passengers, Skopje Airport with 1,649,374 passengers and Podgorica Airport with 873,278 passengers.
Essentially, Athens “El. Venizelos” Airport is hugely benefited by the intense touristic traffic of the capital as well as from its strategic location. It is notewrothy that Athens International Airport in 2016 recorded more passengers than the airports of Bucharest, Sofia and Belgrade combined. If 2017’s traffic statistics maintain this pace, the gap between AIA and the second airport is expected to widen even further.
However, we need to clarify that the comparison concerns the main airport of each of the Balkan counties, thus excluding other airports with considerable traffic such as Thessaloniki and Heraklion in Crete (which would have also made it to the top-five). In that sense, Istanbul Airport, was also excluded as it is not a capital city airport.
